Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday January 4, 2007

Things in our country in the Year of Our Lord 2007 are in need of a touch from the Lord Himself. That our nation has become irresponsible is noted on every hand and especially in the media.

Marriage and the family are subjects of all out philosophical war, not only concerning whether or not Bill and Harry may marry each other, but even the overall nurturing of said family. That the Bible gives crystal clear teaching on all aspects of the current war seems to be forgotten by even those who purport to believe and uphold its teaching concerning all matters of faith and practice.

Two extreme characters seem to illustrate the depths to which society has sunk.

First on the list is the 'God Father of Soul,' the late, great James Brown, please do not let the acknowledgement of title lead you to believe that I hold him up as a grand family man. However, he did make a statement that is apropos for today's article.

"Sometimes you struggle so hard to feed your family one way, you forget to feed them the other way, with spiritual nourishment. Everybody needs that."

Most of my comments in these letters are based on biblical truth, observation and in some sad cases, my own failures and those of some of my brothers and sisters in the faith. Mr. Brown sure made the case for many who are so absorbed with catching the brass ring, that family is thrown by the wayside. This family tragedy was summed up years ago when my generation was called, "The generation that has everything to live with and nothing to live for." Our larders where full, and our hearts empty.

Now comes the tragedy of the dereliction of folks even in 'Bible believing circles.' This week I have talked with or observed Christians, all of whom are associated with Bible believing, 'Family oriented' groups totally disregard Biblical teachings concerning the spiritual, emotional and financial care of family. In two cases the culprits are 'full time' Christian workers who emotionally, physically and financially have abandoned their families, yet in the programs in which they work, they are held forth as 'our deeply spiritual leaders.' One listened while his former wife sat in a court room and told a judge that she is destitute due to her former husband's refusal to pay support, all the while holding himself up as a great one of the faith, in leadership positions of significance. Even more biblically despicable are the superiors of folks such as this who hide them, knowing they are breaking the law as well as biblical commandments. Such is life in 2007. One prosecutor told me of his intention to have every person under support orders paid up or in the pokey. I am trying to get him on Heraldo! Such is the shame. My hometown Newspaper, The Cecil Whig, runs full color pictures of deadbeat dads in their daily issue.

One man, back in the late 1820's stated on the subject of greatness concerning our then fledgling nation stated:

"There is certainly no country in the world where the tie of marriage is more respected than in America, or where conjugal happiness is more highly or worthily appreciated."

The above is from Alexis de Tocqueville. Tragically, if all of the 'spiritual leaders' in our country who teach all the wonders of the family, and then personally fail to even have regular devotions with said family, where forcefully thrown out of their supposed ministries, the holes in major ministries would cause the movements to appear as Swiss Cheese.
