Is a Mothers Love Sufficient?

By Debi Turley

I am sure that many mothers wonder from time to time whether their love is sufficient for their children as each one of them are brought into this world. I myself have asked this question recently when considering that events before me. You see, I am a mother of a son who is approaching the age of nine-teen. As well as a daughter; who has just turned five. I have started my own company approximately six months ago and have filed for a divorce four months ago. Never in my adventures had I ever wondered whether my love for my children was sufficient, yet, now the question lingers in my mind.

To know the answer to this question I turned back time to my own mother. The time when my mother raised four children by herself; with help from a multitude of family and friends to pitch in when she could not be there. I am quite sure that her task was not an easy one to overcome, and yet I am sure that each mother out there asks if she has done the best that she could to give all she had for her children.

I have found that it was not a matter of how much time I spent with my mother that made the difference. It was more of knowing that she was there and I found security in just knowing that. We were not given all the luxuries of many others. We did without when it came to material things. However, the one thing I know that will never leave me was watching my mother give of everything she had to others. Including, yet not limited to her children.

I, myself, am now faced with this same task at hand. To make it on my own with two children, run a business, and survive through a divorce. Holding me together at times is more of a task that I seem to be able to accomplish. Somehow, I manage and keep going, even in the state of being overwhelmed of all the demands on my life.

You see, I only want the best for my children. Just as any mother would. Still, I wonder if my love is sufficient to carry them through life to their own successes. To give of themselves when there is nothing left to give yet still reach down deep and give just a bit more.
