Healing the Broken Pieces

Sometimes in life, it feels like a part of ourselves is cut off…dead. You know when you’ve been deeply hurt (the sins of others) or when you’ve failed (your own sins). A part of you fractures off. It becomes hidden from view…the broken pieces.

These broken pieces echo a hollowness resonating to our very being. At times they surface causing us pain…many times we try and bury them deep within trying to erase them from our consciousness. This not only causes them to grow roots, but to sprout up in different directions. Nothing we can do can take away the profound impact it has on our soul. Nothing we can do – no matter how hard we try. The problem is not the problem. The problem is in our solution to the problem.

Jesus says "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." (Matthew 11:28 – 30*). The load that we often carry is not really ours to carry. We are not equipped. Christ alone is our strength. In Him we have healing.

“Because of this decision we don't evaluate people by what they have or how they look. We looked at the Messiah that way once and got it all wrong, as you know. We certainly don't look at Him that way anymore. Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! Look at it! All this comes from the God who settled the relationship between us and Him, and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. God put the world square with Himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by offering forgiveness of sins. God has given us the task of telling everyone what He is doing. We're Christ's representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God's work of making things right between them. We're speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; He's already a friend with you.” (2 Corinthians 5:16-20*)

God wants to not only restore the broken pieces, but to transform us. God’s goal is not to make us who we were before, but to change us into who he wants us to be – in His image. “So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for Him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what He wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. (Romans 12:1-2*)

Are you willing to let go of your brokenness and hand it over to Him? Are you willing to let God’s healing balm sooth your soul? Are you willing to be the person that God has created you to be?

Joni Erikson-Tada many years ago recorded a song dealing with brokenness that went something like this:

“Sometimes life seems like words and music
That can’t quite become a song
Yet we cry inside and try again
Wondering what could be wrong
But we turn to the Lord at the end of ourself
As we’ve done a time or two before
His truth is the same as it’s always been
His love reaches even more.

It’s not in trying but in trusting
Not in running but in resting
Not in wondering but in praying
That we find our strength in the Lord."

When you experience the healing power of Jesus in your own life, healing your broken pieces, others will see how He has healed you. Through your experience, others may seek healing and be healed too. Through God healing you, other may be healed. What a profound revolution that would be!

“Jesus told this simple story…‘I'll be explicit, then. I am the Gate for the sheep. All those others are up to no good—sheep stealers, every one of them. But the sheep didn't listen to them. I am the Gate. Anyone who goes through me will be cared for—will freely go in and out, and find pasture. A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever (dared) dream of.’ ” (John 10:6-10*)

Why don’t you pray with me:

“Dear Jesus,
You know all about me and the fractured broken pieces in my life. Please Lord take my brokenness. Please come into my life and heal the broken wounds. Sooth my soul. Please forgive me for holding onto the false picture I have of You…and the false picture I have of myself. Please help me to accept Your forgiveness, to forgive myself and learn how to forgive others also the way You forgave me.

“You too were wounded. Forever You will hold the scars symbolising Your wounds. Help me to remember that Your wounds were made to heal my wounds. In Your Name I pray for healing.

“Help me to trust You completely. I give You my heart – for it is Yours and Yours alone. Thank You for loving me. I know that You have a plan for me – a plan for my life. Give me Your vision for my life. Help me always to stay close to You. In Your Name.
Amen.”
