THROWING SNOWBALLS

One learns fast in this business. Target-selection is most important. Throwing snowballs in the wintertime was one of my favorite activities, right up there with sledding, tobogganing, bobsledding, snow skiing, and ice skating. For a little guy I had a Major League arm. My brothers and sister and neighbors would attest to that.

Our schoolbus route was frustrating. In the afternoon. We would leave the school and go halfway down Beech River Road then stop and let a bunch off to walk the rest of the way home. The bus would then turn around and backtrack by the school and travel many, many miles until it looped around and finally reached our house. It is a fact that we could get off at that halfway turnaround point, walk on the dirt road to the old gravel pit out onto the dirt road that ended about 200 yards from our house. And we didn't even have to run to beat the wayward schoolbus!
One day it had snowed---snowball snow. We could tell right away. That day we had a substitute driver. The regular driver was an older man. Well, Mr. Substitute made the mistake of letting us off the bus before using the turnaround. There were 7,8 boys that got off. Snowball time! Not at each other---at the bus. We pelted it good. Really good. We were 'late' noticing that Mr. Substitute had jumped out and was running toward, hollering, "I'm going to get one of you!" We scattered. I took off over the frozen pond. I heard it: clump, clump, clump---behind me and gaining... He caught me on the other side of the pond. Ought oh! He pushed me down into the snow---and proceeded to give me a 'snow-in-your-face-washing' that I didn't know even existed. He said he singled me out because I was the one who kept hitting the windshield. Oh well....chalk one up to the Major League arm!
This was one of my target-selection lessons. Quit laughing...

"The Lord is known by His justice;

The work of my HANDS surely did me in...

"Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:

I never made it to the Major Leagues either...
