Greetings, and welcome to this late evening edition of the verse of the week. Had kind of a busy day, then went out to dinner after I got home. Ok, so next week and the week after(after a unanimous vote) we will be studying some verses on the birth of Jesus, incuding passages spoken by one of my favourite people in the bible(besides Jesus), Simeon! He is a cool guy, we will talk about him later :) But tonight we are going to be studying Hebrews 7, and Jesus as the High Preist. So tonight we will have a fairly serious and in depth study, and then next week it will be a little lighter.....

"Such a high preist meets our need-one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens."
Hebrews 7:26

Before we get to Jesus as the high preist, lets talk a little bit about a guy named Melchizedek. He was a very special high preist because he was not a hebrew!! he wasa not a descendent of Levi like all the other high preist were. His preisthood was very prophetic of the preisthood of Jesus Christ. Lets look into what his name meant-"king of righteousness" wow......and he was also the king of salem which meant "the king of peace" sound familiar?
He was a very blessed man in his days because Abraham himself gave him a tithe, 10% of his earnings. usually in order to be blessed like that, you have to be a Levite(v. 6)!
HOW MELCHIZEDEK COMPARES TO JESUS
Melchizedek was a different kind of preist because of his geneology, he was not a presit based on where he came from, just like with Jesus. Melchizedek was not from the tribe of Levi which the other preist were from. Jesus Himself was from the tribe of Judah and none from the tribe of Judah was ever a preist, either, before Jesus(v 14).
THE PREISTHOOD CHANGES, THE LAW CHANGES
So basically, yeah!! No more animal sacrifices on the altar. There is now a new way to please God-TRUST IN HIS SON AND HIS HOLY NAME. Easier than killing a lamb, anyway. We have the "spotless lamb" whose blood was shed for all of our sins. Hebrews 7:21 says "The Lord has sworn and will not changes his mind, You are preist forever!" Usually when a guy dies he gives up his preisthood along with his life, lol. So another guy gets his job. BUT THIS GREAT HIGH PREIST JESUS NEVER DIES! HE IS PREIST FOREVER. He lives and pleads to the Father on our behalf. The Father looks at Jesus blood and we are forgiven! Back in the old testament days, when a jewish person would sin, they would go to the high preist, tell him about it, and the high preist would take an animal to the altar, sacrifice it, and ask for forgiveness on the behalf of his people. Jesus the spotless, holy lamb takes our sins to the Father and pleads on our behalf, when we come to him with our sins and imperfection. What a great High Preist indeed, and what a merciful God!
