For the Joy


"But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom." Matthew 26:29 (King James Version)

Meditation upon this promise fills the heart with joy and anticipation. It appears that the Lord Jesus is refering to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb as the time when he will drink it new. He may have chosen to refer to this event at this time as it was only a short while before his taking on of the cross. The disciples may not have, at this point, comprehended this projection into the future but later reflection upon it would bring comfort to their souls.
Jesus Christ was on the edge of the most horrendous three days of his life, yet he allows his mind to go beyond the suffering to that future scene of the Marriage Supper and the joy that will envelope it. It brings to mind the passage, "looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God". (Hebrews 12:3) Oh, that we keep that joy in view.
