Treasure hunting

John 5:39 KJV
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Since moving to New Mexico I am learning how to treasure hunt. I thoroughly love going out to the mesa or the canyon and methodically walking through the sand looking for treasures. I’ve yet to find an arrowhead, but have found a few spectacular gems! I figure if I continue to walk the terrain I will someday uncover something from days past.

As a Christian, I find that reading and studying the Word of God I always uncover a treasure! Have you ever noticed how you can pick up your Bible and read a familiar passage only to see something you’ve never caught before? That’s treasure hunting my friend, and you find these treasures because God’s Word is ALIVE!

And the Word (Christ) became flesh (human, incarnate) and tabernacle (fixed His tent of flesh, lived awhile) among us; and we [actually] saw His glory (His honor, His majesty), such glory as an only begotten son receives from his father, full of grace (favor, loving-kindness) and truth. John 1:14 (AMP)

One thing I’ve learned is, the best days to treasure hunt is after a strong wind. The force of nature removes a layer of sand uncovering a new layer to be explored! As Christians we are not immune to winds and storms, but in these storms spectacular treasure is being uncovered! Truths will unfold and out of the ordinary, mundane sands of existence, will appear the extraordinary!

It is important that I mention treasure hunting is an active hobby! I suppose I could sit and listen to sermons and read daily devotions and consider that my treasure for the day, but there is so much more available! If I want to find that arrowhead I must get up, put on my boots and go out to the canyon! It probably won’t blow up to my doorstep! The same holds true for the Word of God and nurturing my relationship with Christ, I must pick up the Word and study! I must read! I must pray!

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

To become good at treasure hunting, I must actively assert myself, to become strong in the Word I must actively study! I believe for too many years we have become complacent and allowed ourselves to be fed by our pastors! We depend on them to bring us the Word on Sundays, and seldom dig any deeper once we leave the church house! This has produced a lot of baby Christians. My dad use to say, “You have to pull back the whiskers to insert the bottle.” It’s not enough to even read this article. I challenge you to dig deeper! Study out the scripture! This, my friend, is treasure hunting!

Many fear the storms, many hate the winds that storms bring, but God promised to be with us in each and every storm! There is no need to fear! So the next time you hear the wind howling, instead of hiding, know that the storm is uncovering treasures just waiting to be found!

Dear God, thank You for Your Word which is alive! Forgive us Lord for our complacency and stir up within us a hunger for Your Word! Open our eyes, that we may behold wonderous things out of thy law (Psalms 119:19) When the storms of life appear, so often we melt with heaviness, but strengthen us according o thy Word (Psalms 119:28). In Jesus Name we pray, AMEN!
