No’s the hardest word to hear in languages today
You want them to say “yes” but then they take your hopes away

Whatever it is you ask them for you hope that they will say
A cheerful “yes” but they say “no you’ll find another way”

To help someone who needs the help or they’d be on the street
You send the funds not once but twice to help them make ends meet

But when they come to you again and ask you for a need
You indulge yourself to stop and think of their necessity

When will they ever learn to make a life out on their own
Instead of asking family and friends to make to them a loan

So you decide you’ll have to say - “No can do this time”
Then worry about the way you’ll feel when they get off the line

The words of hurt you’ll hear them say as though you’ve never helped
They’ll say you’re rich – they’re poor -
But then they just can’t help themselves

The life you live will measure out what you are dealt today
Will you be looked on as deprived or will they give you praise

It’s not that I have always been a giver yet I try
But I for one must weigh the odds or they can cross the line

How many times have you said yes but wanted to say no
Then find the friend you thought was yours and their true feelings show

Maybe it’s time to let them see you have your problems too
Yet try to show them you love them without making them blue

And so the ugly word to hear when you have had enough
Is that word “no” and you’ll feel sad - but it is called tough love
