"Today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, as you did in rebellion, during your time of testing in the desert, where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did."
Hebrews 3:7

These were the words from the Holy Spirit given to the new believers in Hebrews. The Holy Spirit reminded them of the mistakes of their forefathers, and warned them not to do the same.
The reason the Jewish people wndered in the desert for so long was because of their unbelief. It was not because God wanted to hurt them, but He DID want to TEACH them. The lesson they learned was a very hot, tiring, and long one. But their story greatly helps us.
The Lord tells us to not harden our hearts when we hear His voice. He wants us to trust HIm. It is not always our circumstances that make things dificult for us. Sometimes, it is simply our lack of faith. The mind can be a powerful thing, either way. It can give us great peace and comfort, as we trust the Lord, and follow His ways, or, it can bring about a lot of fear and heartache, as we doubt the Living God.
FOLLWING God great blesses us. NOT following God causes our demise. Look what happened to the Hebrews. The Lord finally delivered them because of the faith of a few people. If more people would have believed and trusted God, they would have probably gotten out of the desert sooner!
When we don't follow the Lord and trust in Him, we cannot "enter into His rest"(v. 8). Rest comes from knowing and trusting in God, and not on our own understanding.
We can learn from the example of the Hebrew people-TRUST God in the beginning, and He will HELP you in the beginning!
