The Forgotten

Some looked at me with pleading eyes
As if to say: “won’t you please help me!”
Guess not many visitors come their way
They are the forgotten of humanity.

Some waved and talked up a blue streak
So glad just to have some conversation
They smiled and held my hand so tight
I could almost feel the quiet desperation.

One lady asked “can you sing for us?”
How about some “Amazing Grace?”
“I’m sorry Ma’am, I’ve not the voice”
Such disappointment clouded her face.

Another asked “You have lipstick on?
Do you have an extra tube to share?
I don’t have lipstick anymore and
I guess my children don’t really care.”

One man asked “Are you my Susie?
You sure have a resemblance to her.
I haven’t seen her in quite some time.”
“I’m sure you miss her, don’t you, Sir?”

Tears filled his eyes, and then mine too
To see the hopeless pain residing there
I gave him a hug and asked him “Sir,
Will you bow with me in prayer?”

They’re stuck away, unseen by most
In what is called a ‘retirement center’
Forgotten, unloved, sometimes abused
Without another soul to be their mentor.

I am ashamed to live in a nation as this
Who shows no respect for their aged
On judgment day, what will God say?
For this crime, will He be enraged?

It’s a mission field, right here at home
There’s so many alone and dying
How can we claim our Christianity
If God’s mercy, we’re not applying?
