A large percentage of the population believes that marriage will be this fairytale life that we see in one of Mr. Disney’s movies. NOT! Most of us didn’t grow up in a fairytale home but yet we think that somehow we can create it. As we remember the movie Snow White and Cinderella, we remember both girls walking off with their Prince Charming. We imagine peace, happy faces, birds singing and a happily ever after. The Carol Burnett show did a skit one time of Snow White after the Seven Dwarfs, that skit was far more realistic as to what life is really like than what my imagination dreamed it would be. Carol Burnett (Snow White), was sagging in various places, was overweight, on her hands and knees washing floors and miserable. The skit was hilarious but unfortunately when we are in the midst of our unhappily ever after, it’s not quite so funny.

God never promised that we wouldn’t have trouble in this world, quite the opposite really. Read and write down the following scripture, pray that God will teach you as you seek wisdom from Him.

John 16 (33) I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

Matthew 6(34) Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

1 Corinthians 7 (28) But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.

2 Corinthians 1 (3-4) Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

2 Corinthians 4 (17) For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

What have you learned so far from Gods Word?

Just as God has forewarned us that we will have trouble in our lives, He has also given us instructions on how to deal with this trouble. The first step in overcoming obstacles in your life is knowing that God Almighty is in control. How great is that. The creator of Heaven and Earth and all things in it can fix your marriage. Before we go any farther in this study, we need to look at the character of God and see exactly who we have in control of our lives. When we recognize His love for us (yes, even your spouse) and the power He has, we can then feel stronger in our quest for a godly marriage.

Again, before looking at the following scripture, pray and ask God to open your eyes and show you who He really is and to be able to trust that His is the Hand that moves you to soar like an eagle. As you read these versus, take some time to thank God each day for what you have learned about Him and His wonderful self.

Genesis 1 - creator of Heaven & earth

Psalm 103 - The Lord is compassionate

1 John 4 (7-21) - God is Love

1 Peter 2(4) - Jesus is chosen by God

Romans 6 (15-23) - set us free from sin

1 Peter 1 (3-9) - savior

Psalm 37 (4) - Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. (In a future lesson, we will look at what the desires of our heart should be.)

Romans 8 (28-39) - called us according to his purpose
- gave up his son for us, for me.
- in all things he works for the good for us
- we are conquerors in Him
- nothing can separate us from the love of God

2 Timothy 1(7) - For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, love and self discipline

Hebrews 4 (14-16) - approach the throne of grace with confidence

John 15 (14-15) - we are his friend, not his servant. A servant does not know what his master does. He has made known to us everything God has made known to Him.

The following is a list of many different names for God along with their meanings. This will also give us insight into the different characteristics and qualities of our Loving Savior.

El Elyon - The Most High God
El Shaddai - All Sufficient One
El Olam - Everlasting God Elohim - Creator
Adonai - Lord, Master
Qanna - Jealous
Jehova-nissi - The Lord My Banner Yahweh - Lord(Jehovah
Jehovah-raah - The Lord My Shepherd
Jehovan-jireh - The Lord Will Provide
Jehovah-rapha - The Lord that Healeth
Jehovah-shalom - The Lord is Peace
Jehovan-sabaoth - Lord of Hosts
Jehovah-tsidkenu The Lord Our Righteousness
Jehovah-mekoddishkem - The Lord who sanctifies You

Food for Thought: When I personally read these scriptures, I thank God for creating the heavens and the earth, for creating and choosing me. I thank Him for loving me so much that he sent his one and only son to die, for me. I thank Him for his love and compassion. I thank Him for His word which shows me His love and His power in my life. Because of this I have the confidence to thrive and overcome in Christ. How exhilarating that is for me, how freeing that is knowing that my success in life has no boundaries because I can soar through Christ. What a wonderful and beautiful comfort it is knowing that God is my Father and my Friend as well. There are many who have been treated badly by parents, remember that God created our parents as well. But He is our true Father. When I think of how protected and just plain old taken care of I felt when my father was alive, I have a very peaceful feeling. God loves me even more than that. He is my Friend. Friends share things with one another. He has shared his teachings with all who will accept them. How truly special I feel that He has called us His children and His friend. It is my prayer for you that you are beginning to feel the love and power of Christ that empowers you. This is Who I want in control of my life, how about you? I truly look forward to finding out what each one of you has learned about our Father.

Also friends, as you seek to find God’s strength and wisdom and to rebuild your marriage, know that Satan will be attacking. Satan doesn’t want you to have a Godly marriage. Be prepared. By reading scripture every day, you are putting your armor on and you are going to need it.

Special Assignment: Make a list of ten attributes you love or like about your spouse. Don’t be surprised if this is difficult. Keep the list handy throughout the week and write down things as you think of them. If you can’t think of ten things you love about your spouse, that’s okay, by the end of this study we’ll do another list and this very same task will be much easier.

I once read in a Focus on the Family magazine, a wife said to her husband, “honey, why don’t you grump at me when I leave my nylons over the shower rack or leave the lights on?” His reply was this, “well dear, those things remind me that you’re still here.” I thought that was great, so while you are thanking God for His characteristics, also thank God for some of the traits you love about your spouse. If you really can’t think of anything, just thank God that He gave him/her to you and that you are on your way to living in a marriage where God is the Head of your home.
