Many years ago, my mother worked for a dentist. For some reason I am not sure of, this man had an accident and lost his eye. He fell into a deep depression, sure that he would never be able to resume his practice.
My mom and the other woman who worked for him temporarily shifted his patients to another dentist, and then undertook the task of encouraging their boss not to give up. They called, they visited, they kept the rest of the office moving along, waiting for him to return.
He eventually did. His depression never completely left, however, and many years later, he took his own life.
Two days ago, my mother went to court with my brother and his daughter. They were there to sign over my niece's parental rights over her three boys. She, I think, finally realized that she just wasn't able to manage three little ones. Two of the boys have been together, the third, just a month old when he was removed from my niece's care, was in a different foster home.
I believe it's true what they say--that what you put out there will come back to you. I believe that God really does work in mysterious and glorious ways. He shows us in so many, many ways that He truly cares about, and loves each and every one of us.
The foster home of the two older boys, the head of that household, is the son of the dentist that my mother helped get back on his feet all those years ago. He and his wife have been caring for our precious babies for more than a year.
My mother approached him and told him who she was. With tears in his eyes, he hugged her, and told her, "You don't know what you did for my father back then. If you hadn't shown so much love for him, if you hadn't pushed him, I think he would have done what he eventually did, then."
They talked for a while. The man said, "God has His hand in everything. I've always known it. All I can tell you is that I am honored to be the one caring for your great-grandchildren. I feel that God has enabled me to repay the kindness you showed my father, and our family, back then."
My mother was stunned by the way this all happened, as am I. All of us are. Coincidence? Some weird twist of fate? No. And no again.
God has a plan. All of us are part of it. We may never see the actual plan in action, as my mother was priviledged to, but the plan is still in place.
As you go about your business, remember, you reap what you sow. Sow goodness, kindness, and love whenever possible. Avoid anger, bitterness, and revenge.
For we know that ALL things work together for good to them that love God.
