Larry Lilly's Letter Monday October 2, 2006

One of my earliest memories if of listening to the Friday Night fights called the Gillette Cavalcade of Sports and listening to Notre Dame Football. To this day I reconvert to Catholicism each Saturday afternoon. I no longer say Hail Mary's during the game, but I often hope for one!

Hey, it is okay for a Baptist to root for the Fighting Irish, after all a Presbyterian once coached the team!

In his book, "Wins, Losses, and Lessons" former Notre Dame Coach, Lou Holtz, said something that all people should get a hold of and even let the saying get a hold of them:

"The most important decisions a man makes in his life are what kind of relationship he has with God, whom he marries, where he lives, what he does for a career, and what kind of example he sets for others."

Coach Holtz admits the decision relating to God is by far the most important.

It's my observation that every one of these decisions are of such importance that they each impact for good or ill all of the other decisions. I know literally thousands of people who love Jesus, but they have spent the bulk of their life trying to find ways to live peaceably with the spouse of their choice. Clergymen who have fought the Manse Wars are legendary, John Wesley ranking somewhere near the top of a miserable pile.

What of the man or woman who loves Jesus and each other, but has chosen a job/career that was chosen in the ignorance of youth and over the years has grown to utterly hate their work and to detest themselves for not having the courage to change?

What about where you live? Again, the numbers are in the thousands I have known in different parts of the country who despised most everything about the area of their habitation.

Here's a burning question about the kind of example we are leaving for others: If those who you influence follow your example, what kind of person will they be? Will they be fulfilled, happy, at peace? The folks we influence the most are influenced the most by our example, not our words.

It would in the long run make no difference if you made all the right choices except your choice concerning Christ. If, however you make the right choice concerning Christ and all the rest of your choices come under the long term heading of wrong, or poor, you will certainly need all the power that comes from having made the number one right choice.

On marriage it may a good idea to keep the words of the old Greek, Socrates in mind:

"To marry or not to marry, whichever you will regret it."
