The True Tithe

Interestingly enough, everyone considers the tithe as being the first fruits of our earnings. Money is all that is considered in this scenario. However, God ask us to give the first fruits of our income. Consider this for a moment. Aren’t the gifts that he gives us, our business abilities, our artistic talents, our patience, our forgiveness. Aren’t these income as well, are these things not gifts given from the Lord?

We seem to regulate our giving to monetary moments, however isn’t true giving the offspring of humility? When we humble ourselves we are giving that which only we can give. Anyone can give money, but who of us can really humble ourselves. Give the first fruits of forgiveness, by forgiving first, even when we are wronged unjustly.

Jesus exemplified this while He was being nailed to the cross. Who can forget the words, “Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.”? He gave forgiveness first, without anyone requesting it.

God, our Father only requests 10% of what He gives us as a token or sacrifice. We are to give back to Him 10% of everything we receive. Are you willing to give Him 10% of your time, 10% of your thoughts, 10% of your love, 10% of your health, 10% of your personality, the list goes on.

He asks so very little in return for the 100% of what He gives to us. He does not give to us just a little air, a little life, a little intelligence. He gives us all of what He would have us have for the use and betterment of not only our own lives, but others as well.

Take 10% of your resources, all your resources, and give it away. Forgive just 10% of the time, soon you will be forgiving 15%, 20%, 30% until it returns 100 fold. We limit what we are given by what we give away. Tithing is not simply about money, it is also about yourself. Giving of yourself, for we did not even make the very bodies that we occupy while here on this earth, yet we act as though they are our own creation.

We need to learn to be more of the creation and less of the creator. Having more reverence for His supremacy and His charity in our lives. Money is easy to give, humility true humility requires the true tithe of self.

Can you give 10% of yourself, regardless of the cost to you? This is the true tithe. Just another place to pause and consider in our ever growing search for a real relationship with God, our Father.
