I’m Not Impressed
I have spent a lifetime trying to impress man. Even when I thought I wasn’t. I told myself I just don’t care what people think. I was lying to myself and to God. But He knew and that’s what is so cool. So now if I can just get that into my heart…well I’ll be doing pretty okay.
So how do I start? Well, first God says we are not to worry about impressing man. Matthew 6:33 says “But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.” (amp)
What am I doing when I am trying to impress others? I am trying to gain something, whether it be a good feeling about myself, a promotion, or money I am trying to gain something. But, God’s Word clearly states that we are to seek Him first and all the rest will be added. Can I impress God? Of course not, how can I possibly impress one who knows what I am going to do before I do it, and say before I say it?
Yet, I find if I evaluate my thoughts and moments, that I have a consistent battle to fight off the idea of impressing someone else. Even when I sing at home alone, the Lord has blessed me with a exceptional singing voice, I find myself thinking what if so and so could see me now. What would they think? Wow, what is that? I see myself as a very humble person, but am I? How can I be when I have thoughts like this?
Before I got too hard on myself though the Holy Spirit stopped me and helped me realize that if I am finally noticing I am doing it, and summarily repulsed by it, and there was a time when I wasn’t when I justified or rationalized my thoughts and actions, than I am on the right track to humbling myself before the Lord.
Have I made it there yet? Gosh, no. But the fact that I am finally conscious and set afire a new to fight it means that I am on the right path to His will for my life. I don’t need to impress anyone or be recognized for my efforts. All I need to do is seek Him first, and all the rest will be added.
So as far as all my strivings to have man recognize me, to impress others? I am finally in agreement with God, I’m not impressed. Pretty cool, huh?

Very good Cyndi, and very true. Being "people pleasers" gets us into all sorts of trouble--even causes us to run the risk of burning out. We all do need encouragement, so that we are reassured that we are going the right way. But we need to get past the point of needing the applause of man. Ultimately, the one thing we should be aiming for is the day we hear "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
Thank you for a very honest article. I look forward to seeing more from you in the future.
