Cattywompus

Proverbs 3:6
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

For the last couple days the word ‘cattywompus’ has been going through my head. For years I heard my mother use this word, but had no clue as to what she was talking about, there were other words as well, but for now I’ve done a bit of study and found out that ‘cattywompus’ is not in the English dictionary.

Go figure! But all hope is not lost, I was able to find the word in a slang dictionary and it means simply, out of alignment! Suddenly so many things made sense, about my mother that is. Of course, I can’t let a good word like this go to waste, so I began to think about the things that are ‘cattywompus,’ and how easily things become ‘cattywompus.’

I know I’m a bit peculiar, but ride along anyway.

Years ago my uncle presented me with my first Thompson Chain Study Bible. On the first page he wrote the scripture from Proverbs 3:6. There’ve been many times throughout the years when my life was not in proper alignment. I’ve spent many years out of balance, and this is all a direct result of ‘not’ acknowledging God!

When we begin to think we have all wisdom and know better how things should run in our lives, everything gets ‘cattywompus.’ When we begin to make decisions and plans for our lives without acknowledging God, our lives can be summed up as ‘cattywompus.’

King Solomon penned this instruction for a reason; in all thy ways acknowledge him. It wasn’t so we can go about doing our own thing! He didn’t say, ‘hey go ahead and make plans for your future and contact God in about 20 years and he’ll straighten it all out.’ No, it was very plain and very simple – in ALL thy ways acknowledge him!!

Can you think of an area in your life that might be ‘cattywompus?’ Is there some area in your life you made decisions without acknowledging God and allowing him to direct your paths?

If you are feeling a bit ‘cattywompus’ don’t despair – get back in alignment with God and allow him to have the reins once again! You’ll find the ride will be much smoother!

Oh Lord thank you for not giving up on us – even when you see how out of balance we’ve become – you are still right there ready to help us and get us back on the right path. Lord, forgive us for thinking we know better and we can handle our lives without acknowledging you! Forgive us for our pride and help us to acknowledge you in everything we say and do! Help us Lord to put you back in the proper place of our hearts and to be aligned with your Word!

We ask this in Your MIGHTY name, AMEN!
