Alone Again, Naturally
I remember this song from the early 70’s. It was by Gilbert O’Sullivan. I don’t remember if he did much else that was a top 40, but this one has always stuck with me. I think because it was a really sad song and I identified with the ‘Alone Again’ part of it during that period in my life. Thank God, now I know I am never alone! The song went like this:
In a little while from now,
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promised myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower,
And climbing to the top,
Will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it's like when your shattered
Left standing in the lurch, at a church
Where people 're saying,
"My God that's tough, she stood him up!
No point in us remaining.
May as well go home."
As I did on my own,
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday,
I was cheerful, bright and gay,
Looking forward to, but who wouldn't do,
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down,
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch,
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt,
All about God and His mercy
For if He really does exist
Why did He desert me
In my hour of need?
I truly am indeed,
Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that
There are more hearts
Broken in the world
That can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?
(instrumental break)
Now looking back over the years,
And what ever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to have cried the tears
And at sixty-five years old,
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand, why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart
So badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally
This is a story about life. This poor guy was evidently stood up on his wedding day and he wanted to jump off a tower and kill himself. He thinks God deserted him when He probably did him a favor! God is sovereign, He does not make mistakes. I wonder if Gilbert O’Sullivan ever realized that? Then his Dad dies leaving his Mother alone. It is a sad song but the saddest part to me is the bridge (I think that’s what it’s called) of this song. Read it again. It goes like this:
It seems to me that
There are more hearts
Broken in the world
That can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?
We point them to Jesus, for heaven’s sake! That’s what we do! Broken hearts don’t ever mend if they are left unattended. Have you ever noticed when things are going well in most people’s lives, they are caught up with the good times! Man, things are great! It’s hard to witness to them about Jesus during the good times. Why do they need Jesus? They are doing just fine on their own. But as soon as they come to a bump along the road, all of a sudden - it’s all God’s fault! How could God let this happen to me? I'm not judging because I used to do the same thing, just an observation.
It’s easier to witness to somebody when they are hurting. People will either do one of two things in a tragedy;
1. They get mad and blame God or;
2. They cling to God for strength to get through it
Look for broken hearted people tomorrow. Pray that God will put you in their path everyday to share His Good News with them. I find that people in this world are hungry for truth. They need the Heavenly Father to lean on in a crisis, if they can lay down their pride long enough to listen. But how do you know if they are sincere or not when you lead them to Jesus? You don’t. Only God knows - let Him deal with it. You are only a witness, not the Judge. Two days from now things may turn around for them and they may not acknowledge it was God who made the difference. They may go back to their old ways. But I truly believe every time we share the gospel with someone, we do make a difference! Some people are just slow learners :) They will remember you though, and what you told them. God's word never returns void. They may even get their Bible out five years down the road, who knows? God.
Bad things happen because of Adam and Eve and that nasty little three letter word called SIN and until Jesus comes back, bad things will continue to happen. I wish I could get people to understand how simple it really is. We were made in the image of God to worship Him through the good times and the bad, always. He is a friend that sticks closer than a brother, He will never leave us or forsake us. What a friend we have in Jesus! Now that’s a good song!
This life is just the dress rehearsal for eternity. I like to tell people something that really gets them thinking: “If you are not comfortable worshipping God in this life - how do you think you will be able to spend all of eternity worshipping Him?” Get real - It’s not gonna happen.
