Letting Go

Part 1 Our Sacrifice

When Jesus calls us to lose our lives for His sake, what does it mean? For me it meant giving up pre-marital sex, looking at pornography, and lying. Now keep in mind I was a college student when I gave my heart to Christ, and these things were extremely hard for me to give up. But why is that? Why do we have such a hard time giving up things that are making our lives worse? In this series I dive deep into issues, some obvious, some not, that may complicate our sacrifices for Christ.

Let’s rewind one year, I just graduated from high school, I was on my way to Ohio State to study pharmacy. Now let’s fast forward two quarters, I decided to switch majors. Surprised? Actually anyone who knows someone who goes to college will tell you that happens quite a lot. Most people change their careers at least once, which got me thinking. Do we really know what we want in the first place? There are so many choices, take for instance going to a grocery store to buy detergent, and you’re simply overwhelmed. How do I want my clothes to smell? Like wildflowers, or like rain? Now if you’re like me, you buy the stuff that’s on sale, provided it doesn’t destroy your clothes! But I base my decision off of price; others could base their decisions off a variety of issues. So how do we base our decisions when it comes to God? Do we look at the price tag? Do we examine whether the risk is worth the price?

Now let’s go back to a year later, after reading the bible I decided to give my heart to Christ. Here’s the reason why I did, it made sense. My whole life revolved around me, what I wanted at that time, and my life didn’t make a lot of sense. Impulses change, emotions change, and I wanted to base my decisions on something more concrete, more fulfilling than impulses. Anyone who tells you faith isn’t logically hasn’t viewed faith in the other perspective. Giving your heart to God means you’re giving up your “impulses” you’re giving up your insecurities, so that you can base the way you live your life by concrete, never changing principles. With God what you see is what you get. Though you are sacrificing much, think of what you get in return. You get peace, you get grace, you find purpose, and your life has meaning. Now to me that’s a great deal, even if it means giving up everything I am. I mean who am I anyway?
