Ours is a culture dealing with the harsh realities of homosexuality and all its influences. One of my prior articles (“We Need to Wake Up,” June 7, 2005) grazed the surface of this subject, but now my plan is to present this from a different angle. I’ve noticed that supporters of that lifestyle, especially those who claim to be affiliated with a church, argue that since Jesus never spoke on the subject, it cannot be a sin, and therefore, the church has no basis to support its anti-gay stance. That’s a propagated fallacy. Let me explain. (All verses are quoted from the NASB with parenthetical added.)

GOD: “ All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.” – 2 Timothy 3:16
In other words, the Bible, without exception, is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit breathed to man, in order that man would know what is right, what is not right, how to get right, and how to stay right.

FATHER and SON: “Now they (the original disciples) have come to know that everything Thou hast given Me is from Thee; for the words which Thou gavest Me I have given to the them; and they received them (words)…” – John 17:7 – 8
The words spoken by Jesus were the words given to him by the Father. These words were also the truth (17:17). Jesus passed them to the Spirit.

SPIRIT – “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth (words); for He will not speak of His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said, He (Spirit of truth) takes of mine and will disclose it to you.” – John 16:13 – 15
In this passage, the Holy Spirit is speaking, but not his words. He speaks what he hears from Christ, who gets what he speaks from the Father. But the Holy Spirit does not hoard this truth. Three times (for each member of the Trinity) Jesus said it would be disclosed to us. It was disclosed by way of the Holy Spirit’s carrying men along, getting them to write in their particular style, yet without error, where the finished product was exactly what he wanted them to write (2 Peter 1:20 – 21).

In a nutshell, the Father was the originator, the Son was the speaker, and the Spirit was the influencer. All three worked in collaboration to give us the word of God. It was clearly a divine product.

Why does the confusion remain? Unfortunately, there are deviations from biblical inspiration. There is natural inspiration that teaches the writers were geniuses who wrote without supernatural help. Then there is dynamic inspiration that takes natural inspiration and couples it with divine help. Another is degree inspiration that teaches all the Bible is inspired, but some verses and passages more inspired than others. There is the partial inspiration view where some parts of the Bible are inspired where others are not. Concept inspiration teaches that certain concepts, not the actual words are inspired. Finally, there is Barthian inspiration. Karl Barth (1886 – 1968) was a theologian who believed that Jesus Christ is the word but verses and passages that do not mention or discuss Christ are not. Yes, Jesus is the Word (John 1:1). He is the living word where a relationship is started and enhanced through the written word. Barth’s view is similar to that of the Jesus Seminar that inaccurately concluded only the words in red are authoritative.

Here is why I think the pro-homosexual side is in error:

1. As proven “all” Scripture is inspired. Words not in red are equally inspired as those that are not. By the way, none of the original manuscripts had red lettering. What is written in the Bible, even those words spoken by others, is all considered to be a part of the word of God. Leviticus 18:22; 20:13 and Romans 1:24 – 28 are fully God-breathed as John 3:16.

2. It is true the gospels do not quote words from Jesus regarding his stance on homosexuality. But John 21:24 – 25 teaches there were many other things concerning our Lord that were not written. Could Jesus have spoken about homosexuality? The answer is obviously yes. A plausible explanation for its omission is, there was no need for Matthew, Mark, Luke or John to address the issue because those in that day knew Jesus was against homosexuality. It should be clear to us today as well. There are no direct quotes from Jesus recorded in the gospels to refrain from child sacrifice. Does that mean it was and now is acceptable? God forbid!

The pro-gay agenda argues from silence where silence does not exist and as a result continue to draw a prejudiced conclusion.

The result is clear. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit equally inspired the entire Bible. God did not give the option of picking and choosing preferences. Respect those who practice homosexuality and those who support it. But remember there is no divine authority that says respect is to be equated with agreement.
