I wish I understood
I wish I knew it all
Why we all must suffer
Because of Adam’s fall

I did not bite the apple
Neither did my wife
Yet we live in sorrow
Intended for all life

There seems to be a curse
Attached to being man
Evicted from the garden
Divided from the plan

I did not wield the hammer
I did not drive the nail
I did not make the sin
That marks us all for hell

With my eyes I see
With my heart I hear
The anguish all around us
And the pain so near

My God, my God
Why is all of this
Are you up there sleeping
Will our plight you miss

My dear and loving child
A quick reply then came
My bones and heart did tremble
As He spoke my name

You are not the first
These questions to employ
I’ve known your every thought
Since you were a boy

Remember when your mother died
And with me anger had
Then raised your fist and cursed
When I took your dad

You took your heart away
And from my face you turned
Your thoughts were not toward me
Yet your anger burned

But then as if a roe
To me came running back
When you child lay sick and dying
Her light was turning black

Meek and very humble
You lay down at my feet
Crying from your soul
Together we did meet

I know you did not sin
As the first man did
But sin has lived within you
Since you were a kid

To each of you a will
To all I did impart
To freely pick and choose
From all within your heart

So, from the beginning
I had devised a plan
To free you from the sin
Of the fallen man

I listened so intently
As wisdom filled my mind
I devoured all the scripture
My sinful heart could find

God in all His wisdom
Sent His only Son
To free us from this horror
And this race we run

It still is sometimes hard
To understand it all
And why we all must suffer
For Adam’s early fall

But, I do no longer
Think about it much
I just read and pray
And try to keep in touch
