Encouragement
I am sure you must have read the inspirational: Footprints and moved by its sentiments.
I have seen three versions of the story and if you don’t mind I would add mine.
If you have not, I will recap, but it is better read.
Written in the first person, a child of God had a dream that he was walking along a beach with the Lord. Like a movie across the skies, he saw flashes of wonderful fun-filled fellowship with the Lord, like the one Enoch had with God and God took him. Remember how God visited Adam in the cool of the day and had a chat with him?
He kept seeing two sets of footprints in the sands of time- his and the Lord’s. ‘O how wonderful’, he thought. ‘This is the life!’
O how he cherished those moments to continue unabated. But as he continued to look, the unthinkable happened. He started seeing only one set of footprints.
What?! he exclaimed.
He remembered the scriptures: ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you until the end of the age, He who come s to me I will in no wise cast away. Fear not! When you go through the fire it will not burn you and when you go through the river, you will not drown” Have I not commanded you? Shall a mother forget her sucking child? Even if she does I will not forget My own. I have carved you on the palm of My hands. Be strong and be not afraid. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
He was greatly disturbed, to say the least.
He then approached the Lord.
Lord, I can’t understand what’s going on in this dream. It was You who said, “I would never leave you nor forsake you until the end of the age”. You also said, ‘Fear not, I am your God I will help you. I will uphold you and retain you with my victorious right hand of rightness and justice.’” Your word says, You are not a liar- You are not a man that You should lie.
Lord, I don’t understand why You have violated your word concerning me.
Then the Lord replied: My child, why would you think I would abandon you when you needed me most? You are the apple of my eyes. I love you with an everlasting love. I gave my best – Jesus Christ for you. Why then would I forsake you in your hour of need? In your most trying moments when you could not walk with me, I had to carry you, hence the one set of footprints you saw.
Without a shadow of a doubt we all come to moments in our walk with the Lord when we feel abandoned, it feel as if the Lord is a million miles away, God is silent if not deaf or dead, and we cry foul, why, why, why? Where is God?
Feeling the presence of the Lord is great. You can sense it in an anointed meeting or when a minister who has paid the price is ministering. You see God’s manifest presence.
There times when you feel so close to the Lord that you ask a question and back comes the answer audibly through your mouth and you know that it was not you but God chatting with you. You sing to Him and He sings back to you. You laugh and he laughs with you.
Who would want to trade such moments for anything in the world?
Incidentally it is not always so. There are moments when we’re like a bird alone on the roof top, lost in a desert storm. We cry and it reverberates back to us, our prayers seem to be going no where.
Those times do come and we must get used to them.
God is always there whether we feel it or not. He is Jehovah –Shammah-the Ever-present Lord. He is a Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. As we come to Him we must believe that he is there, regardless of what our mind tells us. He is faithful regardless of what we see or feel. His love is unfailing regardless of the circumstances.
If He said, He will never leave us nor forsake us, so shall it be. We walk by faith and not by sight.
