Psalms 116, verses 1 and 2 say this, (paraphrased), “I love the Lord. He heard my cry and pitied every groan.” I love these words, because they capture the essence of what God wants us to do through prayer. He wants our undivided attention. In every aspect of our lives, His expectation is to take part in all that we do. Our success lies in our prayer language and relationship with God almighty.

How can we develop our relationship if we do not communicate effectively? I don’t know about you, but silence can sometimes make me paranoid. Even with my mate, if we don’t communicate as I think we should, I begin to fill in the blanks with things that aren’t always positive. I begin to think critically and doing so, fuels unnecessary confusion. Speaking from experience, it’s easier to just go to the person and talk…yes, just open your mouth, heart and ears for communication. Don’t forget that communication is a two-way action. As important as getting your point across may be, being on the listening end is just as vital to the process. I say all this to say, that God is no different. He desires a constant and open communication from us. He likes to be included in all that we do. Actually, He wants to order each and every one of our steps. His expectation in prayer is for you to cast your cares on Him, for He knows what is best for you and in doing so wait to hear from Him. There is a saying, “Silence is golden” and in prayer this couldn’t be truer.

Personally, I would be offended if I were only invited in when you needed something from me. Or only invited over to hear all your problems, but never given an opportunity to help you reach a solution. If I am a part of your life, it shouldn’t be a surprise when things good or bad are happening to you. I should already be informed. Constant communication fosters a healthy, stable and intimate relationship with God. The way God expects us to communicate is through consistent prayer.

He doesn’t mind if it’s five minute or two hour intervals. He wants your consistency. I am learning each day that this faith walk is not as complicated as I once thought. However, I can clearly see why the world doesn’t always embrace religion or God the way we think it should. When you look at the examples we as the church have given, would you be eager to change? This is another subject for another paper.

God loves the intimacy of prayer. He loves for us to lean not to our own understanding, but to His. To achieve this, we must consciously and consistently talk to Him through prayer. Prayer is not just a venue to ask for things for you and yours. Prayer is the best vehicle for sharing with God your thoughts, desires, fears, hopes and dreams. We all know there are several types of prayer. From prayer of petition to thanksgiving, God is no respecter of persons.

However, there are stipulations to having prayer be effectual. Whether, we are interceding or petitioning God on the behalf of ourselves or others we want to know that we are in alignment to His will and that our prayers will be answered. As is stated in Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him; for He that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” What does this mean? Does this mean that all these years you and I have been praying amiss, because we did not truly believe? That in essence, we have not pleased God due to our lack of faith? For me this one scripture brought it all into focus.

We must spend our time pleasing God by believing on Him with every ounce of our being, by totally relying on His Word and the information given us daily by that still small voice. And even when we stand alone and there is no confirmation, we have to stand on His Word and His promises because He tells us in Isaiah 55:11, So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. Again, I ask, have we prayed amiss all these years? My answer, loud and clear, is yes! For God is not slack concerning His promises… and He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. GOD IS INFALLIBLE and we are not.

Knowing this, means that we must align ourselves and our actions to do those things which are pleasing to God. We must pray without ceasing. We must constantly ask for forgiveness and repent for our sin. Repent means to turn away from. We must use the precious and unfailing Word of God in our prayer. We must use the Word as our daily speech. These things will help us stay in constant contact with God. It will make it easier to be consistent. It will make us less likely to sin by using that weapon called the tongue. And it will increase our faith to levels beyond our wildest dreams. Let’s try to make God smile daily by keeping our direct link to His heart enabled and user friendly.
