Larry Lilly’s Letter Tuesday July 18, 2006

The events in the Mid-East and also right here in Cemar, the elite section of Terre Haute where I now make my abode, have given rise to much worry, not on my part mind you but to the world in general. Due to the expiration of an agreement instituted by the Federal Government I no longer live in the exclusive gated community of earlier years, so I am more aware of my vulnerability to the mundane affairs of the world.

Hardly a person over the last few days has failed to mention the terrible war in the Mid East as most likely the precursor to the return of Jesus. Most see Him as coming with blood in his eye and brass knuckles to set the unwashed savages in the Arab/Muslim part of the world straight. Being somewhat of a scholar of biblical things, I don’t recall reading of ‘brass knuckles’ but a few things I have read make brass knuckles more in comparative harmony with the long blonde haired German looking Jesus several women/effeminate preachers have written about. It doesn’t appear that when Jesus comes He is going to say, “All right, children, behave.”

I might as well set some ballistic by saying that I think were we good ole boy Mericans, notice the capital ‘M’ to follow the example currently being set forth by Israel, the Mid-East would cease to be the powder keg it now purports to be.

Can you imagine President Bush, in his noticeable Texas draw, joined by former President Clinton, mumbling his Arkansan whine, “You ole boys over yonder, had better have our soldiers whom you are holding back in their barracks by 3:00 PM or by 3:30 PM the world news will be flashing that “At 3:15 this afternoon the Mosque of Omar and the Black Rock of Mecca were reduced to ashes as the result of nuclear explosions.” And Former President Jimmy Carter stating in his markedly Georgian twang, “Listen up, there be more on the way lessen the two soldiers be back where they supposed to be and soon. I would have made this statement stronger, but there is no need for deleted expletives and sides, I am a Christian, of sorts.” The Pope would join in but due to his speaking Latin no one would know what he said.

Hey, a guy can dream can’t he?

We Westerns have developed a fear of alienating people with the truth and thus we live in fear of fanatical tyrants killing our women and children and our way of life becoming but a misty memory.

I read just yesterday in the Sunday Papers that in Turkey and other Arab “civilized” countries, young women are regularly murdered by their own family for such crimes as being raped, being seen wearing a short skirt or going out of the house without a veil. Other than this I can think of no good thing to say about such cultures.

Edward R. Murrow said, “No one can terrorize a whole nation, unless we are all his accomplices.” Apathy is an insidious accomplice.
