Sarah awoke all excited. Second grade, wow! She was really getting old.
She put her feet to the floor and slipped them into the warm fuzzy slippers her mother had given her for her seventh birthday.
She could smell the biscuits fresh and hot out of the oven and could almost taste the sweet butter as it melted on the warm bread.
Ouch! As her mouth began to water she had a strange pain under both her ears. As she clasp her face in her hands she felt the two large sides of her cheeks. What is wrong? Am I getting fat?
As Sarah took her place at the breakfast table the pain became to much and the tears trickled down her face.
"Squirrel face" Her younger brother began to sing. "Sissy is a squirrel, sissy is a squirrel, sissy is a squirrel. Look Mother Sarah has been storing her food just like the squirrels do. "Oh my," Mother said as she looked at Sarah. "I am sorry honey but no school for you today."
"Can I be a squirrel to?" Remarked her brother "and stay home from school?" "No son," replied Sarah's mother. "Sarah is not a squirrel. She has the mumps."
"Mumps!" Screamed Sarah "What is Mumps?" "It is just a growing up thing that all children have. You will be okay. But still no school today."
Mother was right even though Sarah had so looked forward to her first day in second grade. She really didn't feel well and laying back down really sounded good at the moment.
She couldn't eat the warm buttery bread, even the warm cocoa made her cheeks ache.
Sarah laid down and fell asleep. "Sarah" It was her Aunt Evelyn. Mother had called her to stay with Sarah while she worked.
"Are you feeling better?" Aunt Evelyn ask. Sarah sat up from the warm bed her mother had made her on the couch. In front of her lay safety sissors, construction paper and a big bottle of paste.
"What are you doing Aunt Evelyn?" Sarah ask. "I thought we could make paperdolls." Aunt Evelyn replied. "When I was a little girl my mother, your granmother, would play paperdolls with me when I was sick.
Aunt Evelyn was right. Cutting the the paperdolls and making the playhouse really made her fell better.
It kept the over sized cheeks off her mind.
Sarah colored the dresses Aunt Evelyn had cut out for the dolls. She even made paper furniture and a little house for them to live in.
That afternoon Sarah was feeling lots better thanks to her Aunt Evelyn. She had the most wonderful ideas.
When all the children came home from school bubbling with the news of the first day of school and their wonderful memories to keep. Sarah had her own memories. Paperdolls, Aunt Evelyn and the mumps.

With loving Memories of my wonderful Aunt.
