Thoreau's Right Kind Of Man
Author requests article critique
Larry Lilly's Letter Monday July 10, 2006
It appears fervor for the 2008 Presidential Election is heating up as I notice many red necks and faces on so many people. And while most politicians leave me out of the equation, when the time for casting ballots approaches, the phone will ring and they would like to help the old church grow by gracing us with their presence. Of course I usually tell the liaison of my interesting life and they are more than willing to bow out and bless some other group. This is good as I doubt that any who call will, or really want to make much of a difference.
A curmudgeon from the 19th Century put it this way:
"The fate of our country does not depend on what kind of paper you drop into the ballot box once a year, but on what kind of man you drop from your chamber into the street every morning."
The Bible is clear that ministers of the word are to concentrate on the use of the book to produce the right kind of man to leave his home each day and through strong convictions based on Jesus Christ make a difference. In all probability Henry Thoreau went about producing this 'right kind of man' quite differently, but we are in agreement that the right kind of man was and is the need of the hour.
It seems to me that about 40or 50 years ago the politicos grasped the reality that we 'Christian' Americans, will when the chips are down, vote our pocketbook just about every time.
In my morning devotions I pray for our leaders because the word of the Lord commands such, but I also pray for the same Lord to raise up Godly men and women to hold the feet of national and local 'saviors' feet to the fire.
During my morning prayers I petition the Lord to forge me into a tool of righteousness, a light that may shed beams on the correct path that others may follow. This is no easy task or prayers as I, much like Robert Robinson, am 'prone to wander.'
Thankfully, for the most part I have sallied forth each morning a far different man than the one of my pre-legal age days. This is good for me, the wife and children and the community at large. I do not offer this as proof that our nation would be more free or brave if all were like me, but we would all be better if like me, we all looked to the true archetype of the Spiritual Man, Jesus Christ, and walked in His steps. This concept is not new.
I did note to the wife of these many years that if General Powell found former President Clinton so repulsive that Mr. Clinton's presence sickened him, he should have declined to have dinner with him. This observation accounts for the puppy hair on my clothes today. Such is life of a man trying to be the right kind.
