A Sunday Evening Note From Larry Lilly, July 2, 2006

Due to being so tired I can hardly talk I will break again this week from writing the daily letters. I hope you will pray for my recuperation from the pain of ignoring the admonition of the Lord to ‘Come apart and rest awhile.’ We all know the failure to do this over the long haul results in coming apart period!

It has been a good day here at Terre Haute by the Wabash. Church was really good and the music department outdid themselves with a special 4th of July celebration.

I have the evening off and have enjoyed sitting around, going out to the back yard with the dogs, three of them today, Max who belongs to Brittan, Molly belongs to Joyce and Tucker belongs to Dawn. Though covered with canine hair, I do not own a dog, but then I enjoy all dogs. Molly and Tucker, seem to be fearless and precocious while Max tries to be dominate aggressive until a firecracker explodes and thunder roars through the sky, and then he is a puppy all over again, sixty pounds of mixed Husky and Terrier trying to cram himself into my lap. While he slept in that position for about an hour today I reminisced about the first time I ever saw him in the arms of the man, Joe Sollars, who had rescued him from the junk yard where he near died as did his siblings. He weighed about four pounds. I loved him that day and have ever since. Many of my intellectual friends assure me that humans and dogs can’t love each other, but I overlook their ignorance about such things and care for Max anyhow. If the higher cannot love the lower, then how do you account for Jesus the highest loving you and me?

I seem to be more strongly bonded to Max than the other two ornery canines possibly because I know he needs me more than Molly or Tucker. Anyone could take and care for the lovable Molly and the eight pound three year old miniature Dachshund. I know that Max will never pass the test of letting some fool put their hand in his feeding dish while he is eating. He may be a cannibal. He is making progress in other areas, but will always need a firm but understanding hand. I treat him as I do The Great Blonde, when he is upset I leave him, and her alone!!

As I write this note, Molly and Tucker are in the back yard watching the fireworks in wide eyed wonder. Max is laying across my feet in terror! I try to be there for him.

In my life I have known moments of terror and also a few terrifying years, yet it has been to, as it were, to lie at the feet of Jesus and find assurance. It is hard to explain how you find comfort at the feet of Jesus, and still quake in terror at what you perceive to be coming at you like a runaway freight train.

There are a few rather terrifying things in the mix for me and the family, especially my daughter this week, but while trembling at the thought, we will walk up to them, look them in eye and trust Jesus, much like Max trusts me to somehow keep him from the horror of the noise. I know the truth Mosie Lister expressed in his song, “He will keep me safe til the storm passes by.”

Perhaps by Monday next our storms will have passed.
