It is a wonderful thing to live in a context of family, friends, church, or fellow workers who provide us stability and safety. It is the heart of human community. But there is also a possible downside to this scenario. Within the context of the familiar, we may begin to tire of it.

This doesn't mean that the familiar is not good. As a matter of fact, we need many things that are familiar in order for us to live well. Things like family, spouse, children, friends, recreation, and even God. Often we can always rely on the familiar in our lives for sustenance and guidance.

But there is something wrong when we get bored of the familiar. Something is wrong when we find ourselves admitting that we're already getting dry. And equally there is something wrong with being put in a box, lacking in creative movement. In other words, the familiar could also become a prison.

Thus within the context of the familiar, we need to guard the gift of inner freedom. To get bored is no reason to throw away the familiar. It may simply be a call for a change in us to find new energies and ways to continuously enjoy what we have or where we are. However, we should not at the same time idealize the familiar. Leaving it may remain a healthy option for life to go on.

But for whatever option we take, the requirement is always careful reflection. Only choices based on careful and adequate reflection will draw us to grow beyond the familiar. It is the inner certainty of the rightness of our choice that will surely sustain us in the journey.
