God’s Mysteries

As I jogged down Oklahoma State Highway 3 to fulfill my daily exercise program, I noticed the flatness of the floodplain of the North Canadian River Valley. On the north side of the highway, cattle graze unimpeded. On the south side, a mix of cattle and horses do likewise. This is not unusual for this is Oklahoma! Yet, if one slows down, he or she will notice two horses grazing on the rich river bottom flora. From a distance, the horses look like any set of horses. But on this November, 2005 day after Thanksgiving, I notice something quite amazing and unusual about them as they grazed closer to the highway and the wired fence that restricted their movements.

Stopping to greet the pair and looking into the eyes of horses revealed that one of these fine animals is blind. Yet, it owner has seen fit not to put it to sleep but to let it roam free in verdant pastures. To allow this horse the opportunity to sustain its life and in its condition is a feat in itself.

However, if one listens carefully, he or she will hear the sound of a bell. The sound comes from the second horse. Attached to its collar is a bell. It lets the blind horse know where it is so that it may follow the seeing horse to sources of food and water or maybe to provide the blind horse with companionship.

As one notices this relationship, they will see the sighted horse seems to check on the well-being of the blind one. It will listen for its bell then walk slowly to it trusting that it will not lead it to harm or astray to places it cannot graze.

As I return to the highway back home, it occurred to me that God is like the owner of these two horses. God does not throw us away just because we have a handicap, disability or faced with serious personal, social or spiritual problems or challenges. I find it amazing, in a growing secular world, how humankind has and is attempting to divest itself of God—His goodness, kindness and concern for all of us. There are so few who are working so diligently to remove God from every phase of American life—not just with Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter—but every phase of American life.

It is and has been reported by numerous polling and scientifically oriented agencies, both secular and non-secular, that nearly 90% of all Americans report themselves to be Christian. Yet roughly 1 or 2 percent of hate-filled and Godless population through organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) work tirelessly and skillfully to remove every vestige of Christianity. Why? So they may get rid of marriage as they have done in Sweden. So they may legalize homosexuality as they have done in Canada. Make socialism (a failed socio-economic system) a way of life in the United States as it exists in France (where socialism persists double digit unemployment is a persistent problem. Why?

Since the coming of Christianity more than 2000 years ago, societies are more just and laws for the common good have been implemented for the betterment of society in spite of the evils done in the name of God. Yet over all Christianity and its influence down through the centuries has been the conscience of humankind, protecting rights and freedoms, being a stalwart for liberty, life and justice for persons unborn and dying for all are endowed with dignity regardless of circumstance or condition.

God watches over everyone. He knows what we need to be all that we can be. At times, we are blind and are being guided by God Himself. On other occasions, we are sent to be a guide by helping others see the goodness and glory of God and be His spokesperson. In both instances, it is up to us to be a willing and responsive person who is willing to use her/his time, talent, and treasure for God’s glory. That is to say: “Yes, Lord, what will you have me to do? Guide me!”
