Sabbath—What’s It For?

For a couple of years, I’ve lamented that Sundays are becoming just another day to mow the yard, paint the walls or seek entertainment. “Whatever in the world has become of the Sabbath?” I would often say or think.

As part of an earlier New Years resolution, I began with a rhetorical question: “What does it mean ‘Remember the Sabbath’ “? To answer my own question, I went to the Bible to study the actions of Jesus. I determined that Jesus argued for and did those things that established “Shalom”. Shalom is a Hebraic word that may loosely be interpreted as “goodness”, “peace”, “wholeness”, “good health”. That gave me some ideas for how the Sabbath might be made more meaningful to Type A, B, C or any type of psychological personality:

 Spend a longer time at prayer or in your selected devotional period and attend church services.

 Give some thought to reconciling any dispute your may have with family, friends or associates in your heart and mind. Then make a telephone call, pay a visit or write them a note or letter of your actions.

 Take a walk and as you do visit with the Lord.

 Read a book. Hopefully, you will read one that will bring you closer to God.

 Visit or call someone who is unable to leave their home due to illness, age, injury or a disability.

 Have a picnic with family and/or friends.

 Go fishing with the children. While fishing, discuss how nature fits in with God’s creative plan.

Come up with three of your own ideas for honoring the Sabbath:

Jesus declared that: “The Sabbath was made for man…” (Mark 2:27). This is one more example of a wonderful and beautiful gift from God! One day out of every seven for giving honor to God and increasing “Shalom”. On our Sabbath during our journey on earth, let us then make the most of the day God made lovingly and specifically for humankind! Thank you, Lord!!!
