You have a desire to know who you are. You want a clear sense of identity. It's simply a built-in part of human nature.
Yet why may you still find it so difficult to see or discover?
A significant step in knowing who you are is by understanding that you are usually not what you think you are. Within you (and in each one of us) lives a child. A way to find out who you are is to get to know your child within. That's your true identity.
The problem is, at an earlier age, that child within you might had been exposed to criticism and poverty. Encouragement may had been denied of you. As a result, you develop a tendency to believe that something is wrong with you. You see who or what you are as defective. At least that's what you felt you are and you acted on it.
The identity you clinged to is false. This is what I mean when I say that you are not what you think you are. Many times, deep within, you need to let go of what you think or feel you are before you can discover who or what you truly are. So, to find your true identity means to give up the false one.
One more thing to remember is this: While alive, you are not your body.
Years ago during college, I entered a School of Medicine facility where corpses of dead people were kept for medical studies. I could not forget the chill when I suddenly found myself beside a dead body in one of its rooms. I thought the dead body was moving!
It could be hard to deal with a body that doesn't move. I mean, one that is devoid of the pulse of life. Yes, you can see the BODY, but the PERSON is no longer there!
Friend, when you pass on, what will happen is unquestionable. That weightless, invisible identity will be missing.
Author Wayne Dyer aptly describes what I'm trying to say: "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience."
Indeed, to find out who you really are, you need to understand the true essence of life. You are soul. You are spirit.
You are therefore greater than what is describable. Be thankful that you're alive!
