What To Do When Rejected by Others

I remember talking to a student who had suffered severe rejection from her parents. Her Mom and Dad would continually say to her, "You're nothing. You won't amount to anything." So, those destructive words from her parents were always in her thoughts, damaging her self-image and sense of value. She continues to suffer as a result of this abuse.

It's not a new problem. It appears quite common among lots of people to find themselves frozen when others mistreat them. As one noted psychologist put it, "They can't seem to move past square one." If you find your self experiencing this, what do you do?

It's time to discover this essential truth: Your self esteem and sense of value cannot be dependent on how other people treat you. And it's also time to discover that God accepts you even if everybody else in this world rejects you. Psalm 27:10 says, "Although my mother and my father have rejected me, the Lord will take me in and adopt me as His very own child."

Granted that your parents had always been beating you down verbally. Perhaps, outside your home, you experience people rejecting you for whatever reason. Constantly remind your self that you're no longer allowing other people to play games with your mind. Your value in God's eyes remains the same. He always accepts you no matter what you go through in life.

Of course, it would be remiss of me not to point also at the influence of the parents. Children are especially most vulnerable to parental expectations and influences. If there's one destructive habit I can mention that parents could have, it's trying to shape or motivate children by telling them they're not good enough. With such unkind treatment, it could end up making the child's self disintegrate.

Now, let me talk to you. If your own parents did this to you, acknowledge it and then get over it. Blaming your parents is never the answer. It's too late to go back and change your past. Forgive to be free. Move on. Put your energies where they matter the most: Accepting and improving your self to reach your greatest potential and happiness in life. Never again let your parents or other people, circumstances, or environments influence your estimation of your value.

You are God's prized possession. He will never reject you, so don't reject your self. Hold your self up high, knowing that God has a special blessing and purpose for your life. You are somebody.

This is a sound message. It should be put where youngsters could read it, even parents, some of whom do a lot of damage to their children's self-esteem.
