Bad habits weigh us down. They often hold us back in life. Our potentials are not fully developed because of bad habits. Such a life condition inevitably leads to unhappiness.

King Solomon in Proverbs 26 paints a graphic picture of bad habits. He wrote, "As a dog returns to his own vomit so a fool repeats his folly." That's a strong image of bad habits. Bad habits are those that you do that you shouldn't be doing. They bring bad consequences which obstruct sustained personal growth.

This is the reason why it's important to develop life-giving habits. Life-giving habits are good. They are like fuel that keeps us growing and making progress. Success and happiness are simply habits - good, life-giving ones.

Because it's important to develop life-giving habits, motivation is necessary. They are developed through conscious intention on our part. Usually there's a close connection between motivation and behavior. When we're rightfully motivated within, life-giving habits lead us to respectable behavior that frees us for greater or better things.

Another reason is that it is always easier to develop bad habits! For example, without planning to do so, just join a crowd that's more interested in good time than family life and you'll find out what habits you're developing! In the process of solidfying our character with life-giving habits, we really need to be ever watchful of our behavior and correct ourselves when we stumble.

Benjamin Franklin once put it nicely when he said, "Your net worth to the world is usually determined by what remains after your bad habits are subtracted from your good ones." Teach yourself (and your children) good, life-giving habits. Then your life will be safe.
