Jesus strides out of the pages of the New Testament with purpose and power to deal with the problems of people. He is sublimely unconcerned with prestige and public opinion--even life-threatening public opinion. People were his purpose--nothing else mattered. None of His time was wasted on anything else. He came to reaffirm man's worth by laying His very life on the line for him.

This is the winsome Jesus whose compassion compelled the common people to love and admiration, whose impeccable logic routed the Pharisees by turning the hot white light of inquisition back on them, and finally whose stedfast patience in death moved the hard-hearted Roman soldier to say, "Truly this was the Son of God!"

Since Jesus dealt so perfectly with people and their problems in life and in death, He ought to be the textbook for every relationship we have on this earth. He was an enabler. People went away from their encounters with Him more able to do and to be. It showed when a person had been with Jesus. He looked at a person so deeply and so positively that he felt it and was moved in a positive direction as a result of it. And every person Jesus dealt with was worth the time it took to deal with him, no matter what kind of value, or lack of it, the world assigned him. Jesus was never too busy. He was about His Father's business, true, but that business was seeking and saving the lost (people)--wherever and whomever and however. He never used the same method twice because He never found two people who were exactly alike and needed the same thing. People are not carbon copies. We would do well to remember that and not get set too deeply in methodology. People have different problems and are at different places in life development. It takes time and sensitivity and interest to find what someone needs--all of which adds up to love of the lost which is what motivated Jesus. If He found them on the wrong road, He pointed to the right one. If He found them on the right road, He urged them onward and upward--always affirming their ability to grow and become more than they were. Jesus was single-minded in His purpose. He came to lift mankind up by teaching them the Way that would bestow abundant life here and a prepared mansion over there. He taught us that only people count--nothing has transcendent value except the souls of people. We need to live our lives and build our relationships with others on the principles illustrated by the man Christ Jesus, our perfect pattern.
