The Soviet Union
A powerful force
that kept the people in the dark
Triumphing with terror,
oppression and torture, control
Poland, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria,
Latvia, Czechoslovakia

Then there was Gorbachev with Perestroika
And a flood of light was let in
Freedom bell rang. The death knell of strangulation,
Deception, separation and limitation also sounded.
The great wall fell and freedom was born.

Apartheid kept the people apart
Treated the blacks, Indians
and coloured as sub-human.
The best of the land was taken
Slavery in the 20th century
Then came the light in some minds.
This cannot continue, they said.
We must fight for our rights
And the battle began, and ran and ran
Mandela, Biko and others paid the price
Many with their lives until freedom came
Apartheid crumbled and fell
Let there be light and there was light.

And in the post independence era,
Neo –colonialism replaced colonialism.
Corruption, militarization,
tribalism and nepotism,
bad financial management and brain drain
siphoning fund abroad now rules the day.
Aids, poverty war are warring against Africa.
But thank God, there is spiritual light.
Let there be light! And there’ll be light.
