Devotionals
I was young: 5, 6, 7 range. We had a lot of cats around our farmhouse in Maine. Not many mice. Not many rats. My memory recalls a total of 17 at one time. That's a lot of cats and kittens. Some were inside the house. Some were outside. I have 4 cats here at the log cabin, 2 inside, 2 outside. Maybe I learned to love cats back on the old homestead.
We children played in the many different attics available. There was an attic above the house part, an attic above the bathroom area, an attic above the shed connected to the house, and an attic above the shed connected to the first shed. Plenty of places to explore--- plenty of ways to pick up a splinter or two. The house was designed so you could almost get to the barn, by going through these connected sheds, in case of a down Mainer snow storm.
One day in the big attic, we saw a kitten fall down beside the inside and outside wall. LOST. The kitten was crying, we children were crying. An awful scene. My Dad tried to fish it up through the space. No way. It was down by the kitchen floor level. We could hear it crying through the wall. My Dad didn't particularly like cats. Do you know what he did? He went outside with a wrecking bar and a hammer, and maybe some other tools and...made a hole in the side of the house by the corner of the kitchen . Then he reached in and brought the lost kitten to safety. LOST NO MORE. That was a terrific thing to do. I looked at some old photos this morning....and the hole in wall was still there! Now I have it available on the internet.
"What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be LOST." Matt 18:12-14.
"But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are LOST: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them." 2 Cor 4:3,4.
God cares dearly for the LOST.

Leon, you have written a very interesting and heart warming article, and I really like the way you tied it in with spiritual truth. I have not seen the picture of the hole in the house, but while reading your article I was visualizing your dad cutting the hole to rescue the kitten. Thank you for sharing this. Thomas
