My dad was a craftsman with wood and metal: sailboat, paddlewheel boat, houses, grandfather clocks, ships in a bottle. He built us kids a BOBSLED. Wow. Four or five of us could ride on it at a time. The only drawback was that it would not travel off-road. It needed the hard-packed snow on the road. And a big hill. We pulled the bobsled about a mile and a half to THE HILL. My older brother Dwight was the driver. He handled the steering mechanism. We would push and then climb aboard for a fast ride down THE HILL. Very fast. Zoom down the hill and out onto the flat road, probably a half-mile trip. Fun. Exciting. Worth it.
Now the driver and the riders were not the most important elements in THE RIDE. At the end of the course there was a right-angle bend in the road. From the top of THE HILL we could not see if a car was traveling toward THE BEND in the road. Therefore, one of our group would have to serve as a WATCHMAN. From the top of THE HILL off in the distance we could see the WATCHMAN. Waving arms frantically, he would give us the all-clear signal. An off we would go. The WATCHMAN certainly was the key to our safe bobsled ride. All the neighborhood kids wanted to ride on that bobsled.
Jesus Christ said, "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with an assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep WATCH."
"Therefore keep WATCH because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back---whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: WATCH." Mark 13:32-37.
A Christian should conduct himself in a WATCHFUL mode---a spirit of anticipation concerning the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. WATCH!
