Dear Son of My Heart,

Yes, you are a broken vessel; but take heart; I am healing your brokenness. I will heal you my way, not your way or the world’s way. I will use your brokenness to fulfill the very purpose for which I created you. I created you to be a vessel for my love, but such vessels are not meant to be filled once and stay full. I want a vessel that must continually be being filled or it will run dry. I want a leaky vessel. It is out of your broken places, your wounds and your weaknesses, that the love I pour into you will flow out to others.

An unbroken vessel must be filled to the brim before anything can flow out. Such people can only give to others when all their own needs are met first. Like the Pharisees, they give only out of their abundance. I prefer the widow, who clung to nothing for herself, but what little was poured into her she gave away. She was truly a leaky vessel, for it was out of the brokenness of her poverty, yielded to me, that my name and hers were glorified (Mark 12:41-44).

It grieves me that my children put so much effort into patching their cracks so nothing can flow out. Some try to patch their cracks with sin, medicating their pain with various addictions, greed, or vanity. Others try to patch their cracks with good works or religious activity. Both grieve me. When someone’s cracks are patched, the life and love I pour into them stagnates and becomes stale. Patching one’s cracks does not heal one’s brokenness; it only covers it up and holds it inside. They are like those who clean the outside of the cup but leave the inside filthy, or the whitewashed tomb, inside of which is death (Matthew 23:25-27).

My healing, true healing, is different. It doesn’t patch cracks from the outside; it cleans them out from the inside. My healing does not remove the cracks or hide them; it transforms them into outlets for my life and love to flow. My life in you is meant to become a spring of living water (John 4:14, John 7:38). Living water is flowing water. My healing opens up your cracks and cleans them out so that the waters of my life can flow freely.

I love your brokenness, but I don’t love the pain that caused it. Nor do I love the things with which you’ve tried to patch it. Let me into your wounds so that I can bring my healing. I will clean out both the sin and the good works that block the flow of my life. I love you, and I desire to love others through you. Give me your brokenness and I will transform you into a vessel for my glory.
