My Pastor gave me the idea for this poem in a story he recently shared.


The Dusty Old Bible

While out browsing one day,
In my favorite Antique store.
I came across an old Bible,
All dusty and worn.

The cover was cracked,
And the spine was broken.
On the edge of the pages,
Were notes from sermons spoken.

The pages were tattered,
And yellowed with age.
As I leafed through the old Bible,
I saw tearstains on every page.

On the very first page
Was the name of the owner.
Presented way back in 1910,
To Brother J. Edward Stoner.

It was given to him as a gift,
From his dear Mama and Dad.
The inscription said “to our Son,
In whom we are so proud.”

Bro. Stoner loved Romans,
And it was plain to see.
That the Psalms and Proverbs
Were two of his favorites to read.

Now Bro. Stoner must have been
A good and righteous old soul.
For in his precious Bible,
Many stories were told.

He had them all written down;
Names, dates and even the place.
Of every soul he’d won for Christ,
By the Lord’s good grace.

I thought, what a great treasure
This old weathered Bible must be!
I know it's worth a fortune!
Surely unaffordable to me.

Then I turned to the back cover,
As I was filled with suspense.
But sorrow overtook my heart,
When I saw the tag for fifty-cents.

Fifty-cents for God’s Word!
It’s worth many pots of gold!
Did the store owner not realize?
God's great stories it told?

The main thing here, I reasoned,
That the store owner missed;
Was that God’s Precious Word
Had been sadly dismissed.

I thought; what a tragic life,
Lived by the store owner.
Who doesn’t realize the worth
Of this Bible owned by Stoner.

But God had a great plan,
That day in the Antique store.
That included using me,
And that dusty Bible, so worn.

I turned to the book of Romans,
Chapter three, verse twenty three.
And I walked up to the man,
Who was watching a small tv.

“Excuse me, Sir
May I have a talk with you?
I need to tell you,
About a story so true.

Did you know Christ died
So that you could be free?
Sir, if you were to die today,
Do you know where you’d be?"

This man was so hungry,
For God, I could tell.
As we went through Romans Road,
His teardrops silently fell.

Then he gave his heart to Jesus,
In that old Antique store.
And that day God and Bro. Stoner
Rejoiced for the soul of one more!

Now that dusty old Bible
Is read every day and night!
By it’s brand new owner,
My new brother, in Christ…….
