The Tale Of Two Men
(An Attitude Of Gratitude)

Victor, a 37 year old man, earning a six figure yearly income, could not seem to find one good thing about his boss, his wife or his children. He even harbors negative views about himself---his nose is too small, he is too short, his hairline, in his opinion, is receding and he complains about having a beer gut! Talking to Victor is futile. When it was pointed out about all least a half dozen positive, good things about Victor, he began another round of "tear in my beer" statements about his physical features and his character.

On the other hand, Bart, a 38 year old man works two jobs, could not complete his college education because of the unexpected conception and birth of his daughter a year ago. He has mounting health related bills because his special needs daughter's illness and in-patient costs. Bart, however, is cheerful, optimistic about his future and love being around his wife and six children.

Bart's positive outlook on life and positive perked this writer's interest about him. It was found that his wife refers to him as a great husband and a responsible and loving father to their children. In an unintended conversation with Bart, it was learned that Bart is thankful for his wife, his jobs, his good health, his employers and the used car he was able to purchase three months ago. In his own words, Bart said, "I'm grateful to God for everything I have. In spite of my hardships, God has blessed me so much! My blessings far outweigh what hardships I've had! Amazing!!!!

Comparing the lives of Victor and Bart, I'm convinced that Bart's attitude of gratitude positively affects his life and the lack thereof makes Victor miserable. Although Victor has all of the material comforts, it was determined he lacked many friends, rejects God, and rejects living life.

Each day we read and listen to the gloom and doom attitude of the media regarding the American economy, school and country. Some accept the negative views and feedback rather than express an attitude of gratitude to God. Not for what we do not have but the many, many blessings God has bestowed upon us. An attitude of gratitude has been found to have its benefits. With an attitude of gratitude, people are drawn to those who express positive views about themselves, others and their circumstance. They are a joy to be with and around. On the other hand, the doom and gloom attitude seeks pity parties or woe is me approach to life. Peace, joy, hope are all pervasive to those who display Victor's approach to life.

So who would prefer to be around?
