Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday March 30, 2006

A news release informed the world of the following:

"A woman shopping at Wal-Mart paid with a personal check. The clerk asked to see some identification. The woman showed her West Virginia drivers license. The clerk grabbed it away from her hand and said, "If you're going to use a fake ID, you could at least use a real state." The manager was called and upon showing the clerk a map of the United States was able to verify that West Virginia is in fact a state with all the powers and privileges appertaining thereto."

There is no need and certainly no benefit for me to mention the clerk's hair color.

Years ago I was the regular on the close at a Bluefield, WVA TV station. I always saw the humor in that while I was giving the final five minute devotion prior to the National Anthem, the station played 'Country Roads' in the background. In many way's it was almost heaven.

The point, weak though it be for today's rumination is simple: "Have you ever made a fool of yourself?" Of course you have and on more than one occasion if you're like me, you haven't so much as made a fool of yourself as you have simply revealed the truth.

I recall one time way back in the when I had hair days, I was pastoring a church in Southwest Virginia. I announced that I was going to speak on the subject of God giving the children of Israel Iron shoes. I really had a humdinger of a message, outline, poems and a powerful closing illustration. For the life of me the closer it got to Sunday the more panic gripped my heart. I searched every Bible and every help I had all to no avail. My friend and godparent of our children, Joe Edmonds, was called to shed light and he in his mountain way said, "Preacher they ain't no sich a verse." He was right. I had announced the title on daily radio, the weekly TV program, in the newspaper ad and a letter to every home in the county. The word spread and for a long time I was known as "Iron Shoes Lilly." The jest was given in kindness, at least that's what they said.

I sort of extricated myself from this trap and merely stated that while there really is no such verse, there should be, and I will tell you why. At that point I went right on with my gorgeous sermon. God did keep the Israeli kids' shoes from wearing out over a period of forty years wandering the wilderness. When your wife is nicknamed 'Imelda' you notice such things.

Our clerk in her ignorant zeal thought she had captured Mrs. John Dillinger and I in mine just knew I had the Mother of all sermons. I know about fire engine red faces.

Imagine the coming day when Christ is revealed and all who adamantly denied Him; see Him.
