Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday March 22, 2006

Do you ever read something that you find humorous? I often do and in doing so I also often miss serious error. Take the following from none other than Dr. Albert Einstein:

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."

It is easy to get lost in the part about human stupidity. Webster defines it: "1 : being without limits of any kind : subject to no limitation or external determination." A full definition would take three pages, but you get the idea.

To assign such magnitude to human stupidity is right on target. I write from observation of the myriad of this type of humans I have known over the span of countless years.

I wish I could say Dr. Einstein was off on the subject of human stupidity, but on the preponderance of the evidence to do so would be a stupid mistake. No one would argue negatively against the boundless senselessness of the race. Race tracks, gambling boats and the search for true love build such a mountain of evidence that the jury would barely leave the room before returning with the guilty verdict.

On the other hand, the good professor who also said, "The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax" at least wavered on the infinity of the universe. The universe is big, but it will measured someday as will human stupidity.

If I recall my theology correctly, God is infinite. And this is good and comforting when grasped. Admittedly my source is the Bible, but then I know of no sane person who claims to fully grasp this book of books. Its claim for infinity is found within its pages, it is settled in heaven forever. How do you measure that which is eternal? Am I on good theological ground when I assert that only that which is eternal is infinite? According to the Bible, that which is infinite is very small and there is good foundation for Einstein's hesitancy on the concept of an infinite universe. Nature worshipers wish it were so, but alas the eternal word claims all of this wonder will pass away and God will make a new even more wonderful one. I assume He states this in order to warn an infinitely stupid group of humans of the folly of worshiping the creation more than the Infinite God who created it in the beginning. It is really simple: Is God the creation of the universe or is the universe the creation of God? Christians believe the latter. Even agnostics such as the German Professor give pause to the probable truth of the latter.

You and I have the right to read a personal word from the Lord today and every day. We have the encouragement to trust Him for the wisdom to survive this temporary time in which we live, our God, our Christ who cannot be measured is on the record that He really does care about, about even our smallest trouble.
