What Did I Think About Today?

Once again, another day has come to a close. It is usually at about this time, closing up loose ends before retiring to bed, that I reflect on my day. I don’t add up how much money I made. I don’t walk around my property, admiring my possessions, wondering if more are yet to come. No, the end of the day is when I ask myself how much of my day was spent doing God’s will. If I am truthful, there has never been a day when I went to bed satisfied with the results. Like most Christians I know, I am fully aware that there is no amount of works I can perform to successfully repay all God has done for me.

Years before Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ came out in theaters, most of my daydreams were visualizations of the crucifixion of Jesus. I had heard so many pastors and ministers describe one of the most dramatic events to ever take place in the universe that it was always ready for playback in my head. And on days when my reality became a bit rocky, I would replay the sacrifice Jesus made on my behalf – 2000 years before I began walking on the same earth. My troubles seem small compared to the burden Jesus carried – the sins of mankind rested upon His shoulders.

My mind’s VHS player, now advanced to a DVD apparatus, has also come in handy when I need inspiration to do what God wants me to do. See, I truly believe that most Christians are quite aware of what God expects out of us – to carry His message to others, both in what we say and in what we do. But often many Christians tend to use the excuse that since we can never really do enough to repay the debt we owe, and since God’s word is perfect and perfectly laid out for all to read, there is little we can do to advance the Kingdom of Heaven. I contend it is that perfection that arms us with the spiritual weapons we need to battle against the spirit of hopelessness currently enslaving our world.

At the end of each day, when we ask ourselves what was on our mind throughout our busy hours, it is best to ponder how much hope we spread to others around us. Millions of souls around the globe wake-up every morning wondering if they will discover a reason for living, a reason to believe life can be better. As followers of Christ, it is our calling to spread the hope Peter talked about: “Praise be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in Heaven for you…” (1 Peter 1:3-4). People need to hear about the hope that never fades!

Whether we volunteer at a homeless shelter, work at a bank, teach a Sunday school class, work on an assembly line, or take the drastic measure of becoming an overseas missionary, our main goal must be to let the Gospel of Jesus Christ shine through in our work, actions, and character. We should not be one person on Sunday and another person on Monday. We are adopted into a family of hope. God wants us to seek out others to become part of the His family.

Worldwide, people are searching for hope, truth, and a joyfulness that can stand up against the greatest of trials and tribulations. The Gospel of Jesus Christ suffices all three needs, and it is our duty to spread His message through how we interact with others. Did I live my day with a Jesus attitude, or did I let worldly issues cloud my behavior? That is the question we need to ask. Is that the question you’ve been asking at the end of each day?
