It seems like Terry the Pterodactyl has always been with me.
When I was a baby, he flew above my crib.
When I was a toddler and my mom took me to the park, he would fly next to me as Mom pushed me in the swing.
Everywhere I went, Terry went too!
Some days, Terry was a big, fierce pterodactyl who chased away the bullies.
And some days, Terry was gentle, like a kite flying in the wind.
I loved his big wings! Sometimes I would hide under them - like when Mom said to clean my room. I always felt safe under his wings.
Sometimes, when I was afraid of having a bad dream, Terry would fly over my bed so I wouldn't be afraid.
But as I grew older, my pterodactyl grew smaller. Sometimes, he flew away and I didn't see him for a few days. At first, I missed him.
I really missed him on the playground at school (he always chased away those pesky bees that wanted my lunch).
But I got used to him being gone, and I started to figure out things on my own.
Like, I figured out that if I put my stuff away when I was done with it, cleaning my room wasn't so bad.
And, I learned that there were always going to be bullies, no matter where I go, so I learned to ignore them and not let them ruin my day.
Even though I'm getting older now, Terry still comes around every now and then, and flies over my bed. I think he's checking up on me.
He sure surprised me the last time he came by! He didn't come by himself, but brought his wife and baby to meet me. He said that he liked being older and I would too.
It's been a few years now since I've seen Terry. I'm so busy going to school and driving to work, I don't have time to daydream like I used to.
Then a funny thing happened.
I got married.
And then I became a Dad...
And I couldn't wait to tell my son about my adventures with Terry
