He Knows My Name

Lately I can’t help but notice all of the name-dropping that people do. The media is all about names. You can’t go out in the world without hearing the constant attempts to impress by “knowing” someone. The more “big” names you can claim from some experience or another the better you are than others so it would seem. Forget about humility; let’s all boast of how great we are compared to those simple folks who never met anyone that anyone’s ever heard of… no one famous and wealthy. That being said let me tell you where I have stood in this situation. Right in the big thick middle of it. Yes, I know, and thank God for the ever-flowing river of mercy.
Not even a week ago I was so very tempted to join in on such a conversation. I thought about it and came up with a name that would have ended the whole thing. Feeling a little surge of pride, I decided to go mention so-and-so and how the whole thing happened. But then before I could get there, they had finished talking and parted ways. I was left thinking; “I’ll just have to tell them later, but I WILL tell them!” Now, let me tell you what has humbled me beyond belief. While going about my business just this morning, I looked up to see a relative whom I know well but have not seen in a very long time. I was thrilled to see this person and nearly ran to them telling them how good it was to see them and I put my arms around them for a BIG hug. Not feeling the love in return, I pulled away to see a look of shock and confusion. My dear family member said, “Oh look it’s … what’s your name?” My dear family member had no idea who I was. Even when I said my name, it didn’t change the suddenly uncomfortable situation. I walked away dejected and a little hurt. My own relative didn’t even know my name. I sat in my chair and couldn’t believe that they didn’t know my name. It was just then that I heard my Creator say, “I know your name.” I realized that even if no one knew who I was and I didn’t know anyone else, I know His name. The Greatest name of all. The biggest name of all. And yet, I find it so hard to drop that Name around anyone. None of the other names I know could change lives. None of them will have an everlasting impact on anything. None of the other names matter when it comes to eternity. The only Name that matters is the One that comes with the most in-depth relationship one could ever imagine. The One that comes with unconditional love and mercy. The Name above all names. And the best part is, He knows my name.
