I recall as a child, my Grandma always told me “One day you’re gonna write a book…” I remember that the first thought I would have after that statement was one of blatant and absolute rebuttal. “Oh no I’m not! I hate writing!” I never did voice that to her however for fear of crushing her dream for me. She was forever giving me journals or writing supplies, and they kept stacking up in my room, completely useless in drawers and boxes. To me, it seemed as though writing was something too time-consuming, something that required much patience and concentration, which in my mind was the very picture of boredom. If at that time you had searched out the word “boring” in the dictionary, the definition would have surely stated, “to write”.
Then came the teenage years and I happened upon some of the gifts my Grandmother had given years back. In a moment of pure insanity (so it seemed) I had the desire to actually pick up a pen and to my utter surprise… WRITE!? That was the very beginning of many long nights I would spend and endless amounts of paper I would consume. I wasted a great deal of time writing for the world things consisting of vain babblings and much heresy. Along with the many who enjoyed my writing, I felt a void of something massive inside. It didn’t matter how much I wrote, there wasn’t enough to fill that emptiness. To make a very long story short, I met the Lover of my soul… the One, the only One Who could have filled that emptiness within. I asked Jesus Christ to be the Lord of my heart and life. That night, everything changed. I soon realized that the Lord had given me a gift in writing; that even before the foundation of the earth He had called me to do so, but I had to write for His glory and not for my own.
Looking back, I see the seeds that my Grandma sowed into my life coming to fruition and how she, knowingly or not, gently and faithfully pointed me toward a piece of my destiny. And even if it may not be the way she thought I would have gone with it, or the way that others would have liked… this is how it was always designed to be. I do plan on writing a book, many I hope, that will inspire and strengthen the faith of others in our Redeemer. I may never write a whole book about memories of my family, but I will always remember them and see the perfect plan and provision of God through it all.
