How to be more content in your walk with the Lord

The world is after us everyday trying to make us discontent with what God has given us at this moment in time. How can we be more content in our lives, so that we can allow God to give us what we need rather than seeking after things aside from His timing for us?
The first ingredient needed in our lives is a close walk with God. Remember in Psalm 37, one of the statements is “commit your way to the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” God knows our desires better than we do, so we must learn to trust Him with what we want to supposedly better our lives. One thing God knows is the consequences connected with what we desire. We cannot know the full impact what we want will have on us spiritually and otherwise. So this is why we must trust God to bring about, in His timing, what we have wished for in our hearts.
One time, I wanted a karaoke machine for my ministry at the hospital and in the rest homes I was ministering in at the time. I mentioned this to my wife one morning that I could really use this to make sure people heard me when I teach, because my voice is rather soft in nature. Later that day, I called my wife and said, “Guess what? I mentioned what we talked about the karaoke machine this morning with one of my friends, and he has one he couldn’t sell at his yard sale that he will give me.” Wow! Talk about an instant answer to prayer. This machine served me well for several years and was a great help in my ministry at the time. God reached down and tapped that brother in the Lord on the shoulder and made my wish come true.
If we believe that we have what God wants for us at that moment in time, then we should not be looking around at things that will make us discontent. Let’s use the example of a home. Let’s say you are living in a place that is okay, but not really what you would call your dream home. If you venture out and step outside God’s timing by looking at other homes you would like, you will get discontent and be unhappy in your walk with God because of it. The same idea could be used with a car that you want so bad, but God has not made it happen in your life yet.
You will know when the right time to start looking for a new place or a new car. Do you have other obligations that should be met before you venture out in a new direction? Will your finances be stretched so much you cannot give as you should to God? Will your time or other areas of your life be adversely affected by what you are striving for at this time? God knows all the answers to these questions already. You do not. Remember the parable of the king’s supper, where so many people were invited, yet each had a different excuse? This could happen to you if you persist in going outside God’s plan. Psalm 37 also promises that God will bring our desires to pass when we trust Him wholeheartedly. This word implies without distraction. Would what you are seeking be a distraction in your life? These are ideas you must consider as you walk with the Lord. To ignore them is to invite problems and possible disaster in several areas of your existence: spiritual, emotional, mental, financial, etc. Proverbs 3 says it well:, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.”
