Awesome is a word that is entirely overused in today’s society.

“That’s an awesome outfit.”
“What an awesome car.”
“I love your hair. It’s awesome.”
“I just had the most awesome vacation.”

Being awesome is supposed to inspire a sense of reverence or wonderment in a person. I see nothing awesome in any of the above statements, nor with most occurrences of the word’s usage.

In contrast, look at the sunrise, sunset, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, or the stars in the sky. Those are creations of God – an awesome and perfect God.

In the NIV Bible, there are 34 instances of the word Awesome, and each time they refer to God, not to things made by human hands.

In Deuteronomy 7:21, God tells us: “Do not be terrified by them, for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.”

Likewise, in Psalm 66:5, we are told to: “Come and see what God has done, how awesome His works in man's behalf!”

God created this universe for us.

When we consider what God has done for us, we should fall before Him in reverence and humbleness, asking only that He have mercy upon us.

The next time you are thinking of using the word awesome, think about this:

Jesus came to earth and died on a cross, rose from the dead to live forever. This He did in His mercy, for us. so that we may seek, find, and serve Him. Now that’s awesome!
