Return From Emmaus
(a poem in five parts)


I. Luke 24:13-16

It is amazing
How you miss the obvious
And see the loss of opportunity,

But not the opportunity
Of the lost.

This is my way, and this is the error
of it. In the former times
You were the
Ever-present tense

Of my hope. Now I am grown
Older - and you are a prophet,
Mighty in word and deed.
The one who once
Had stolen my hope.

This, then, has become
My road to abandonment. The road
Of my loss. Travelers here

Are piled upon by memories
And grief. They must be strong
To extinguish expectation - there is
No comforter and no voice of comfort
Here. This

Is a place where death
Takes hold in the heart of a man. This is a place
Of no companion in the midst of men. A place
Of no compass, of no

Wayfinder on the path
To abandonment.



II. Luke 24:17

How have I come to be here,
Lord? If only I could hear -

If only I could see You, God, then
I know that I
Would know

You as You really are.

Then I would

See

The structure of this place,
A path of enlightenment
Or a path of disgrace. Such

Is the hope of understanding,
Gifted, not earned. Gift me,
O God,

That I may see
The opportunity of the lost
And not the loss of opportunity.


III. Luke 24:27

There are three
Things that remain - faith,
Hope, and love. And the greatest
Of these

Is You, The Opportunity of the Lost.


IV. Luke 24:31-32

You, Lord, are
Like the secret
Of heaven, glimpsed
Then

Gone.

I see You Then I see You not,
But the fire remains

In the heart of passion, and
Passion remains in the heart.

This, then,
Is my road to abandonment. The road
Of my loss. I travel lightly, here,
Vigilent

To extinguish the enemies
Of God, and love not

Life, even
To the death. This is the heart
Of passion, of

Abandonment in the heart.


V. Luke 24:33a

I am neither nimble
Of faith, nor quick to
Believe. This is my way,

And this is the struggle of it. Though

I do not see You,
I know that You
See me, Lord. Come,

Let us lay claim to the return path
Of hope. Quickly. Lord,

Let me find abandonment in Your love
That I may see not the lost opportunity,
But the opportunity
You make

Of the lost.
