Faith
In the city of Rome there is a Church called the Church of the Sancta Scala i.e. the Church of the holy staircase. Inside it is one of the most prized positions of the Roman Catholic Church. There is a flight of marble steps, 28 in number; tradition claims that these have been brought to Rome from Jerusalem, from the house of the Pontius Pilot who delivered the Lord Jesus Christ to be crucified.
The steps are called Sancta Scala or Holy Stairs and many people are seen ascending them young and old , rich and poor, they move up very slowly for it is painful process seeing that they must ascend the stairs on hands and knees to obtain meritorious results . With each step the person offers a prayer and they are told that if the full ascent is made in this way, they may eventually obtain absolution at some future time. But when and where, seems uncertain.
In the 16th century a young Saxon monk traveled to Rome .With the load of sin in his heart, to make this ascent hoping that he would be rid of his sins and unrighteousness and that he would obtain the favor of God. He joined the many people on the marble steps and ascended the steps on hands and knees repeating his prayers.
Halfway through his ascent, he suddenly heard a voice in his soul which said “the just shall live by faith”. Twice before he had heard the same words but they were crowded out by the manmade theology that he had learned. Now finally he understood the Grace of God and his heart was touched and he got up and walked away, a new creature in Jesus Christ. All these shackles of the Roman superstition were cast away.
He (Martin Luther) returned to Germany and rejoiced in preaching the forgiveness of sins and justification through faith alone.
How wonderful that a single verse of the Word of God can change the heart of a person. Romans 1:17, here, did the miracle. It says, “The just shall by faith.”
