The last days of the life of the apostle Peter where days of suffering. He was cast into the horrible prison of the Mamertime.

The Mamertime is a deep cell cut out of solid rock at the foot of the capitol consisting of two chambers one over the other. The only entrance is through an aperture in the ceiling. The lower chamber is the death cell. Light never entered and it was never cleaned. The dirty stench and filth generated a poison fatal to the inmates of the dungeon which is the most awful ever known. How Peter managed to survive those nine long months, is beyond human imagination.

During his entire imprisonment there, he was manacled in an upright position, chained to a column, unable to lay down to rest. But the spirit in him was strong. He proclaimed the glory of God as salvation through his son Jesus Christ. In spite of all the suffering Peter was subjected to, he converted many of his persecutors, almost 50 of them.

Peter met his death in Rome at the hands of the villainous Romans who crucified him. He refused to die in the same position as our Lord declaring he was unworthy.

Peter, the Rock, demanded to be crucified in the reverse position with his head end downwards. His wish was gratified by his persecutors, the Romans, and Peter died as a martyr for the Lord Jesus Christ.
